When a person is addicted to gambling they should figure out some questions to know the status of their problem. Those may come like that:

* If they often gambled longer than they had planned?
* If they often gambled until their last coin was gone?
* If the thoughts of gambling caused them to lose sleep?
* If they have used their income or savings to gamble while letting bills go unpaid?
* If they made repeated, unsuccessful attempts to stop gambling?

* If they have been remorseful after gambling?
* If they ever gambled to get money to meet their financial obligations?

There are some self help processes by which a problem gambler may get off.

Keep a diary. If a person maintain diary especially in the beginning of recovery, that would be highly effective to unlock lots of information about their problem. It will highlight at what times they get the urges to gamble. Over time they will feel more and more empowered that they choose to write about their thoughts and feeling rather than gambling to escape them.

Read as much as you can. The more time they would spend reading how rotten problem gambling is, the more they would believe it. When they read and understand and their core beliefs towards gambling have changed then this will ultimately change their behavior.

Internet counseling. This one allows them to anonymously seek help with someone who is skilled in dealing with and advising problem gamblers.

Face to face counseling. This approach is that they will be placing themselves somewhere from where it is not so easy to walk away. So it has the benefit of making them address their problem for a specific period of time.
